A costly business

Sin is costly! In more ways than one...as we'll think about in a minute.  If you're reading through the Bible in a Year Plan and you've got this far - well done and keep going! You'll have reached Leviticus, and this is dangerous territory - many give up at this point, but it's worth persevering! One the great things about this particular reading plan is that you'll be reading the book of Hebrews alongside Leviticus, which makes a lot of sense as we'll see...

But back to the costliness of sin. Leviticus 4-6 show that the size of your herd or flock could quickly decrease, for even unintentional sin required the sacrifice of an animal. Sin was a costly business. I imagine all these sacrifices were a helpful reminder about the seriousness of sin and the costliness of sin. Perhaps it may have been a helpful deterrent to sin (more expensive than a swear box!).  Every day people would have seen around them the reminder that the result of sin was serious - it required a death.  They would have been reminded regularly of God's holiness and their sinfulness. Why don't we do these sacrifices anymore? We'll have to wait until we read Hebrews 10 for the best answer to that, but you can have a quick look ahead here - it's a great chapter!
