Fishermen are used to storms and Jesus' disciples were no exception, many of them were experienced fishermen and would have been out in many storms, but the one we read about in yesterday's reading from Mark 4 must have been pretty severe as it left them fearing for their lives. And yet, it wasn't the most frightening thing. There was something more frightening than the storm, the man asleep in the boat! The man who they woke up because they were terrified that they would drown. The man who got up and rebuked the wind and stopped the waves - just by speaking! This is not easy - have a go the next time you're at the beach!
The result was that the disciples were terrified - more frightened than they were even of the storm. The man next to them had power over nature. Who was he?
The wind and the waves recognized Jesus' voice as the one who had created them in the first place (Colossians 1:16), the disciples were yet to understand Jesus' true identity. The Lord Jesus is awesome - even the wind and waves obey Him! We should obey him as well, and it is terrifying to face him as disobedient people, but praise God - "while we were still sinners - Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8), and so we can be confident of peace with God (Romans 5:1) because of Jesus. Peace in the midst of the storm. Do you know that peace?
