Plan, plan, plan...

We've all made resolutions that we've not stuck to, maybe you've even resolved to read the Bible in a year before, and you've had the best intentions, but then...

How can we make a resolution that sticks?

Blogger Tim Challies suggests this:

  • Make 1 resolution and make it a specific and realistic one—big enough to be meaningful, but small and defined enough to be attainable.
  • Decide what habits you will need to break and what habits you will need to form in order to succeed.
  • Create a plan that will train you in that new habit while replacing any negative habits.
  • Tell a friend about your plan and ask him to check in with you on a regular basis.
  • Plan in advance how you will meet with temptation and how you will deal with failure.
  • Pray consistently and persistently.

What would that look like for reading the Bible?

  • Decide to read through the Bible in one year, by reading 4 chapters a day.
  • Make the habit of getting up 15 mins earlier.
  • Create a plan...there are lots of reading plans you can use...more to follow (download Olive Tree onto your phone or tablet to get started, comment below if you can't find them!).
  • Tell a friend about your plan and ask them to check in with you on a regular basis (email me if you like!).
  • Decide that if you miss a day, you will not beat yourself up, but will just carry on the next day.
  • Pray consistently and persistently.
